Do not rent the vault: Why a founder should own where the thinking lives
The lesson from twelve years and five note tools: fold what you rent into the system you own.

Your best ideas are probably trapped in a note app you stopped opening.
I spent twelve years collecting notes in other people's tools. Here is what that taught me about running a company, and why I stopped renting the place my thinking lives.
The lesson: your knowledge is your asset, so do not rent the vault
A founder's value sits in decisions, ideas and promises. If those live in five tools, every one of them is a tax. You pay for the subscription, then again in time spent hunting, and again when something important never gets found.
The numbers
- 2,727 Google Keep notes, from May 2013 to November 2025.
- 68 more in Apple Notes.
- Evernote, Notion, Google Docs and ClickUp in between. ClickUp alone was $154.57 a month when I audited my software in September 2025, and I cancelled it.
- Zero places where it all lived together.
The three mistakes
- I chased features instead of a habit. Each switch felt like progress and reset my archive to zero.
- I let notes sit apart from the work. A note about a customer should live with the customer. Mine lived in a notebook that knew nothing about them.
- I assumed someone would build the tool I wanted. For years I waited. In April 2026 I stopped waiting and had a working editor in two days, then kept improving it.
What I did
I wanted the speed of Google Keep with the depth of Notion. So I built notes into the operating system my company already runs on. Notes link to people, brands and tasks. My AI, Fuela, searches them. I imported all 2,727 Keep notes with their original dates, and I added import tools for ClickUp and Evernote so my team can bring theirs.
This is the founder move I teach: take the thing you rent, ask what it is really for, and fold it into the system you own.
The freedom
I no longer ask where something is. That sounds small. It gave me back hours every week, and a calmer head.

I could not find a thing in twelve years of notes. So I built my own app.
